Works in Progress is an online magazine devoted to new and underrated ideas about economic growth, scientific progress, and technology. Go to our website at worksinprogress.co to see all our past issues and articles.
This Substack, worksinprogress.news, was set up to share new issues of the magazine with our followers. We still send out newsletters to let everyone know that a new issue of the magazine is out – here is the newsletter for Issue 18. But this site is now a major part of what we do, sharing links roundups, new chapters of Stewart Brand’s Maintenance: Of Everything, and shorter articles that we call ‘Notes on Progress’. Soon, we should also be sharing episodes of our upcoming podcasts.
Some of the articles that were written specifically for this Substack, such as Hannah Ritchie’s diary of the surprising things she does to reduce her environmental impact, Stian Westlake’s explanation of how the degrowth movement succeeded in Britain, Alex Chalmers’s piece on how a lack of inertia makes grid collapses like Spain’s in 2025 more likely, and Nick Whitaker’s history of the home espresso machine have become classics in their own right.
We are always open to new article pitches, including for Notes on Progress.
