Part of the problem is that "environmentally-friendly" can mean a lot of different things, and they by no means always go hand-in-hand. Often they trade off against each other. In approximate order of my view of importance, most important first:

* Reducing animal suffering, especially that caused by humans (typically described as protecting "animal rights", which I find a peculiar way of labelling it).

* Minimising carbon emissions and global warming.

* Mainting our ability to produce enough food (e.g. worries about soil depletion, bee extinction).

* Reducing air pollution near people.

* Reducing other more "cosmetic" forms of local pollution, e.g. noise and unsightly litering.

* Avoiding "damaging" existing ecosystems and thus having a disruptive effect on life within them.

* Being "sustainable", i.e. not depleting limited resources.

* Reducing waste sent to landfill.

* Preserving the existence of rare animals or plants ("Biodiversity")
