Congratulations! You’ve arrived at your latest metacontrarianism! You are now confusing absence of evidence (although I’d disagree with you on much of that) with evidence of absence!

Why should I take this latest obsession as more valid than the prior ones?

This column feels incomplete. Regardless, it's widely accepted medical advice in the northern hemisphere, that you should supplement vitamin D3 during the late fall to early spring, beyond that supplementation is probably less helpful.

Look at total mortality with and without VitD supplementation.

You've written *that* you've changed your mind, but you haven't said *why*. What prompted you to decide that supplements are not too helpful?

“science was overloaded with complete nonsense”

When the FDA was formed to provide some oversight of medical treatments, the supplement and medical device industries lobbied successfully to be excluded from having to “prove” that their products are safe and effective. Every adult is therefore free to decide what supplements to put in their body and what/who to believe as far as health claims. Some people would like that freedom extended to all medications, and others would like more FDA oversight of supplements. It’s an interesting issue with costs and benefits to each approach and strongly held opinions on both sides.

I quit supplements about a year ago. All of them except a few herbs until they are used up. What they call supplements are nothing close to the real thing. They are man made chemical concoctions having no resemblance to what is found in nature. Essentially they are toxic.

You cannot know exactly what your diet is giving you in the way of nutrition or not. I think the body does a lot with very little in the way of vitamins and minerals. Whatever natural foods are made of, it cannot be replaced with supplements or supplementation in processed foods.

I am 76 and relatively healthy and seldom ill. I don't eat a monstrously healthy diet. I think all illnesses and diseases come from poisoning the body with toxins...and has nothing to do with germ theory and viruses. I ignore all the supplement crazes and gurus.

We each have our own choices to make and coffins to fill. I simply don't believe what the supplement industry is claiming nor do I believe in the medial mafia.
